Live 2 Learn operates out of the commons area at Forest Hills Consolidated School. The program runs Monday through Fridays during the school year from 2:00PM to 5:00PM, except on holidays, vacations, and ½ days. A healthy snack is provided to participants each day. In spring, Live 2 Learn hosts Children’s Stage Adventure, a week long, high-quality production of a classic children’s tale that involves the entire school working with travelling professionals from the New Hampshire based program. During the summer, Outdoor Adventure and Elementary Summer programs run two days a week for five weeks. In addition, a weeklong summer camp occurs in August at Moose River Outpost on Heald Pond, north of Jackman.
The primary goal of the Afterschool Program is to help each student find success in areas of weakness through additional tutoring and homework assistance, as well as education outside of the classroom. Students are able to apply their school day knowledge in the many enrichment programs offered throughout the year.
Through Live 2 Learn the children of the community have a chance to participate in activities including soccer, basketball, dance, movie making, snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating, kayaking, hiking, biking, art, reading, Geo Caching, theater, and our newest, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) program. The Afterschool program has been fortunate to have multiple state wide departments and organizations, including the Maine State Police, Warden Service, Customs and Border Protection, and Maine Forest Rangers, volunteer time to the program. Volunteers help Live 2 Learn bring “out of the classroom” educational opportunities to participants.
To ensure the program continues beyond the 21st Century grant, Live 2 Learn established fees in 2009 and continues to charge and collect for program participation. Live 2 Learn strives to provide opportunities without barriers and will work closely with families in providing options that are both accommodating and affordable. In addition to being a fee-based program, Live 2 Learn looks to smaller grants, as well as the community for other funding sources. These are essential steps in our goal to becoming a fully self-sustained afterschool and summer program serving the greater Moose River Valley Region.
